What are the basic principles of a forklift?

Understanding the stability of a forklift will be easier once you understand a few basic principles, such as:

• The forklift’s ability to handle different loads is affected by a number of factors including: 

• Also, the distance between the centre line of the vehicle’s front and rear wheels.
• Plus the track, or the distance between wheels on the same axel of the truck, and;
• The location of the counterweight and the load’s distribution

Almost all forklifts balance the weight of the load on the forks. Also, the weight of the engine and heavy metal plates (called the counterbalance), hold the rear of the truck. 

Thus, think of a forklift as a seesaw, where the front wheels serve as the balance point. And as long as the force of the weight and height of the load remain less than the force of the weight of the counterbalance in the rear of the truck, the forklift will not tip forward. 

How to avoid tipping over

The force of a move, a turn, and the load’s height and balance on the forks, can easily tip the truck from side to side. Tipovers are some of the most serious and largest percentage of all forklift accidents. 

An imaginary triangle forms on the 3-point suspension of the forklift. This triangle is called “the stability triangle”. It is formed from the front-drive tyres and pivot pin on the rear axel. The pivot pin steers the truck, and helps the rear wheels move up and down over uneven surfaces. 

Therefore, to keep the forklift from turning over, the balance point between the center of gravity of the truck, and the center of gravity of the load, has to stay inside the stability triangle. The height, weight and the length of the load all contribute to the instability of the forklift. 

So, if your load isn’t properly balanced on the forks, or if you turn too fast, this combined centre of gravity moves outside of the stability triangle. This could overturn the forklift. It’s important to always observe these important principles when using a forklift.

How to keep your forklift (owned or hire) safe from rodents.

Rodents are the nemesis to anything that runs on an engine, particularly a forklift. It’s even worse in agricultural areas that have high rodent population. Whether you hire a forklift or own one, be aware.

The problem with rodents is that once they get to the wiring, they can cause very expensive damage. Read on as we share tips on how to rodent-proof your forklift today: 

• First, you should spray rodent-proof peppermint oil on the entire surface of the engine. The engine bay is where most rodents tend to nest, so if you protect this area they’re less likely to look for shelter elsewhere.

Some say it’s as simple as crushing mint leaves and rubbing the paste onto your engine. But, by far the best method is to get highly concentrated peppermint oil. With this method, all you have to do is place cotton balls all over the forklift interior, and replenish them regularly with peppermint oil to prevent rodent problems. 

• Eliminate access holes such as the pressure release vent. 

• Also, don’t put rat bait or rat traps with peanut butter on top of the motor because it actually attracts rodents. You’ll end up with more rodents than you initially had. 

• Use a mouse blocker. The benefit of using this device is that it’s easy to install and it emits a sound that repels rodents from afar. It’s advisable to place it in an open area and away from any form of insulation, while making use of the different settings available. The sound, along with the LED light emitted the mouse blocker, is very disturbing and toxic to rodents.

• First of all, a constant supply of hydraulic fluid to the control valve is made by the pump. This pump is typically shaped like a gear. 
• Next, you have the control valve. This moves the hydraulic fluid in controlled spools. Basically, it regulates the hydraulic pressure. 
• And then, the relief valve is important. Because it is there to prevent the build up of pressure on the hydraulic system. It’s essential at maintaining forklift hydraulic pressure.
• Most importantly, the return line is there. Because it channels the hydraulic fluid back into the tank. This is the final component of the hydraulic system. 

How forklift hydraulics work

The forklift hydraulics system uses cylinders. These look like closed tubes with a rod on the inside. Pressurised fluid is inserted into the tube using hydraulic lines. This causes the rod to protrude as the fluid looks for the path of least resistance.

Forklift hydraulics are responsible for vital forklift functions. This includes, lifting the machine’s load-bearing prongs, moving pallets around. Most importantly, balancing the forks when carrying a load. Therefore, it’s a valuable aspect of the forklift.
